In this introductory series, I want to touch briefly on meditation for beginners. Since time immemorial, much has been written about meditation and its techniques.
Meditation means focusing your thoughts on one task, which relaxes you completely. I often hear people saying they can’t meditate because their minds wander in all directions, so they just give up. Meditating means bringing your thoughts and actions to the centre or the medial part of your body or forehead and entirely focusing on that aspect.
Singing, Painting, Drama, Poetry, Dancing, Yoga, and Chanting, to name a few, are all meditative tools. The idea is to get completely absorbed in the activity and focus on that one thing.
If you are a beginner, I recommend just sitting in any place you are comfortable, putting on music at a low volume and starting with breathing. Focus on inhalation and exhalation. Just sit and observe your breathing for a few minutes. In case your mind wanders, please bring it back to the music.
After a few minutes of observing your breath, start box breathing, which essentially means inhaling through your nose to the count of four, holding your breath to the count of four, and exhaling through your mouth to the count of four. This box breathing helps centre yourself and corrects the energy flow in the body. Please do this box breathing for as long as you are comfortable—no need to count or see the time. The most important thing to do is to focus on inhalation and exhalation.
Once you finish breathing, bring your focus to the centre of your forehead and hum anything you enjoy—a song or chant. Become thoroughly engrossed in humming and feel the humming vibrations enter every part of your body. Once your thoughts start wandering, open your eyes.
This simple ten-minute exercise can correct your energetic imbalance by allowing energy to flow freely. Daily use can help remove stress and improve sleep.
